這是人口流動的世界︰去外地升學、在異地發展事業、到寧靜地區退休......人們在不同的地方定居，期間如何繼續照顧家人，尤其上了年紀的父母？

第一件事要衡量的，其實是父母的意願。可能父母更願意留在熟悉的地方，也可能願意嘗試新生活，又或者定一個時間，再作決定。

子女離港前建議先評估父母的健康、情緒、社交圈子是否有足夠支持。美國老年醫學專家Dr. McCullough 撰寫的《哈佛醫學專家的老年慢療八階段》，提醒子女不要假定父母年紀大，就會失去自理能力，就算父母發現有長期病或者跌倒等，亦不要反應過大︰「強調長者仍然保有的能力，避免驚慌，或過早終結他們的獨立。」

子女可以先了解父母的社區，有什麼醫護社福資源，留意與父母親近的親友。香港大學秀圃老年研究中心總監樓瑋群博士建議要有兩手準備︰包括日常長期支援，例如長者地區中心、日間中心、上門或者院舍服務﹔以及緊急時，有信得過的人可幫手。讓長者安心老去，本來就是整個社會需要一起合作，子女是重要但不是唯一的「持份者」， 需要動員更多家人、朋友、鄰居，以及醫護社福機構等幫忙。
